Welcome to Hollywood!

  FACILITIES and CAMPUS

If you're checking out Hollywood Lutheran Church for filming, rehearsal or studio space, or another big event, here is information that you may find helpful (including photos and dimensions):

General:  We have rooms which can accommodate groups from 20 to 200.

Location:  We're conveniently located in Los Feliz, between Griffith Park and Barnsdall Park, and between the Hollywood (101) and Golden State (I-5) freeways.  We are one block west of Vermont, just north of Hollywood Blvd.  Within walking distance are three hospitals:  Kaiser, Children's and Hollywood Presbyterian/Queen of Angels. Also see:   Getting Here.

Parking: We have an adjoining 37-space gated parking lot which may be made available during daytime business hours; overnight by special arrangement.

Accessible: Our facilities are fully handicap-accessible.  There are 7 restrooms, of which 2 are ADA compliant.  There is a 3' x 5' LULA elevator connecting the two floors.  Both floors are accessible from the street.

Security:  We have security gates on the parking lot and on the Courtyard.  We also have a Night Watchman who lives immediately next to the facilities.

Electrical Capacity:  There are two separate meters, one for the main structure and one for the rear structure.

Light Control:  we have three spaces which are easily light-controlled.  Hoick Conference Room is windowless.  Durkee Hall (3,000 sq. ft.) and the Courtyard Studio (950 sq. ft.) have easily-masked external windows.

Rates: We are a 501.c.3 non-profit corporation, and do not rely on incomes from commercial or profit-generating sources.  However, we do ask for appropriate tax-deductible donations to cover the costs of maintaining these facilities, paying our cleaning and maintenance staff, and keeping our doors open to the community.

The requested donation rates for use of these facilities for film shoots will vary depending on how much space is used, how many hours or days it is used, and what additional amenities and services we provide.  Please contact us at (323) 667-1212.

We have a Sexton and a Night Watchman who are responsible for opening and locking up the facilities. Temporary overnight storage of equipment can be made available by special arrangement.

Durkee Community Hall [3,000 sq. ft.]

The original church basement has been continuously upgraded over its 80+ year history so that it's worthy of the designation as a "Hall." Thanks to the installation of ramps and elevator, it has step-free access for persons with disabilities or handicaps.  Equipment can easily be rolled in from the parking lot or street.

Durkee Hall is our most-used room, especially by community groups most evenings.

Kitchen

The adjoining commercially-appointed Kitchen has been use to serve up literally tens of thousands of meals since completion in 1968.  More than a half dozen people can work in this space easily.

Our kitchen contains both a commercial Wolf range and refrigerator.

The Kitchen is also used for occasional catering for receptions, community dinners and meals for film crews.

Hoick Conference Room [425 sq. ft; 10'-0" ceiling]

Accessible directly from the office Vesitbule, Hoick Hall is often used as a conference room, but may also be used for costume and make-up during a shoot.  Furniture is easily moved or removed.

Hoick Conference Room includes a serving counter with hot/cold water and a refrigerator.

Sanctuary  [3,500 sq. ft.; 24'-0" ceiling]

The main Sanctuary, completed in 1924, has changed very little since the 1930s.  The Sanctuary seats about 250 people comfortably.

The Chancel Apse has travertine marble flooring and oak trim.

Unusual for a small church in 1924, the Nave floor is "raked" -- sloping toward the front for better visibility, so that the space can be used for performances, concerts or even films.  it is also wonderful for weddings.  The room proportions are unusually wide, giving better visibility to all, and allowing for equipment and lighting placement out of range of the camera.

A shot of the rear of the house, dominated by the Gemshorn pipe array and the "Christ of Peace" sculpture by noted Armenian-American sculptor Nishan Toor. New aisle carpets feature gold fleurs-de-lis over a deep red, giving a rich hiastoric feel to the house.

The Sanctuary, ready for an afternoon wedding.

We are in the process, in 2008-2009, of making upgrades to lighting and ventilation systems, in preparation for the renovation and upgrade of our pipe organ in 2010.

The Sanctuary has step-free access.  Its extra wide proportions and 24-foot height make it a good choice for filming locations.  In recent seasons, it has been used as the setting for shorts and student films involving funerals and weddings.

Our Narthex (Vestibule) has recently been refurbished and provide a gracious entry space for weddings, concerts, small receptions and filming.

The Narthex ceiling and walls were refurbished in 2006 and period lighting fixtures installed.

Courtyard and Studio Space

With the refurbishment of our rear Courtyard in 2008, we now have an enclosed, grassy environment for outdoor parties and receptions, complete with a bubbling fountain.  The open area is approximately 2,000 sq. ft.

The garden environment of the gated Courtyard hosts art exhibits, music, "Film al Fresco", church picnics, the annual Blessing of the Animals, Oktoberfests, and "break" space for actors in the Silverlake Children's Threatre Group.

Adjoining the Courtyard is a newly-created Studio/Exhibition space of about 1,000 square feet, which is available for meetings, retreats, and exhibitions.  It is the new home of the collaborative efforts (with a dozen other galleries and studios) of the Los Feliz Art Walk, and opens the first Friday of each month with new exhibits of local artists.

Larry Long Library

The Long Library includes built-in mahogany bookcases on two walls, a computer work-station with internet access, and a high-speed copier.

The Long Library is used frequently for classes, counseling and filming as well as for independent study.

Gallery/Studio   [950 sq. ft.]

A plain but very private space, which is sometimes used for meetings, exhibit and studio space, is available for daytime rehearsals, recording, photography or filming.  If space is hard to come by in Hollywood, this may be very helpful to you.  The Gallery/Studio is currently in used 6 evenings per week for part of the year, so evening sessions may be possible by special arrangement.

Other Useful Information

Music Rehearsal Space is available during daytime hours and some evenings. There are four pianos on site which are kept tuned properly: a Young Chang grand piano in the Sanctuary, a Wurlitzer grand piano in Durkee Community Hall, and spinets in Hoick Conference Room and Classroom 1.

The grand pianos are on wheeled piano trucks and can be repositioned when necessary.
